In a remarkable turn of fate, Bedriya Adem, a 35-year-old woman from Ethiopia’s Harari Regional State, has welcomed quintuplets after a heartfelt 12-year journey of yearning for a child. The unprecedented birth of four boys and one girl at the Hiwot Fana Specialised Hospital has filled her heart with joy, as she described feeling "overjoyed" and "blessed" to be a mother to five little ones.

Bedriya, who faced a long period of depression and despair over her inability to conceive, expressed her profound happiness: "I cannot express my joy in words," she told BBC reporters. "I prayed for just one child, and Allah gave me five." This miraculous event has been celebrated not just by Bedriya and her family, but also within her community, honoring what she terms a divine blessing.

Medical professionals at Hiwot Fana confirmed that all five newborns, named Naif, Ammar, Munzir, Nazira, and Ansar, are in stable health, weighing between 1.3 and 1.4 kg (3 pounds). Dr. Mohammed Nur Abdulahi, the hospital’s medical director, noted that such weights indicate a high probability of survival and healthy development. The successful delivery occurred via Caesarean section, following meticulous prenatal care.

In an astonishing twist, Bedriya was initially informed that she was pregnant with only four babies. The emergence of a fifth child during delivery left her both surprised and ecstatic. Her husband, who has a child from a previous marriage, had often reassured her that their existing family was sufficient; however, Bedriya had been battling significant internal strife as societal pressures weighed heavily on her.

Reflecting on her lengthy struggle, Bedriya shared, "What I endured in the past feels like a distant dream, one I do not even want to recall. After 12 years of pain and solitude, I felt my prayers were finally answered." As a subsistence farmer, she now faces the daunting challenge of providing for her newly expanded family but remains hopeful, stating, "I believe Allah will provide, through the support of my community and the government."

The birth of quintuplets is exceedingly rare, with natural occurrences estimated at one in 55 million. Such events are often linked to fertility treatments, which were not utilized in Bedriya’s case, as the hospital does not offer in vitro fertilization.

The joyous arrival of these five blessings not only signifies a personal triumph but also highlights issues of fertility and motherhood in Ethiopia, where societal expectations can weigh heavily on women. As Bedriya moves forward, she carries with her the love and support of her community, ready to embrace the journey of motherhood like never before.
