In a striking escalation of legal action against Johnson & Johnson (J&J), the number of claimants alleging serious health risks from the company's talcum powder has surged to over 7,000. This case is shaping up to be the largest product liability lawsuit in United Kingdom history, eclipsing the initial 3,000 claimants when it opened in the High Court.

The plaintiffs accuse J&J of knowingly selling baby powder contaminated with asbestos, a substance linked to several types of cancer, including ovarian cancer and mesothelioma. They assert that the company was aware of these dangers as far back as the 1960s. Each claimant is battling cancer they believe is directly related to exposure to the alleged contaminants in J&J’s products.

Despite the escalating numbers and the serious allegations, Johnson & Johnson firmly refutes the claims, maintaining that their baby powder met all regulatory standards and did not contain asbestos. Furthermore, the company insists that its product does not cause cancer. In 2023, J&J ceased the sale of talc-based baby powder in the UK amid growing scrutiny over safety concerns.

The current hearing is expected to wrap up soon, with a judgment slated for a later date. However, legal experts anticipate that the journey toward a resolution may stretch out over several years, given the high stakes and complex nature of the case.
